Kids Choice Chocolate Date Cake

A weekly homemade cake is part of our healthy lifestyle routine. No child can skip sweets, so making the healthier version of sweets at home is a great idea.

This cake can be prepared without dates like any chocolate cake. However, the purpose of adding the dates to it, is to benefit from the nutrients of dates in a tasty and child friendly way.

Dates are naturally sweet and rich in several vitamins, minerals, and fiber. This delicious fruit contains calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and other nutrients. Dates can relieve from constipation, strengthen the bones, and treat anemia.

Time to share our favorite chocolate date cake recipe!!

This recipe serves around 15 pieces.

– 1 cup dried dates (cut into small pieces)
– 1 cup boiling water
– 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
– 2 cups flour
– ¾ cup sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 2 teaspoon baking powder
– ½ cup oil
– 2 eggs
– 1 teaspoon vanilla
– ¾ cup yogurt
– ¾ cup cacao

Chocolate icing:

– 200 g plain chocolate

– 200 ml cream

Start by soaking the dates with 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda in one cup of boiling water for around 1 hour.

After soaking the dates, preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. Grease and flour your cake pan.

In a bowl, beat together the eggs and the vanilla for two minutes. Keep stirring while you add in the sugar and the oil.

Add in the flour, salt, baking powder, and yogurt.

Blend into the batter the soaked dates with the water they were soaked in.
Finally add the cacao and mix them all together.

Pour the batter into the cake pan. Bake for 45 min to 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Take it out of the oven, allow to cool, and enjoy the cake with your children.

Adding icing to your cake is optional. To prepare it, you will need to heat the chocolate and cream in a saucepan over a low heat on a water bath until the chocolate melts.  Remove the pan from the heat and whisk the mixture until smooth, glossy and thickened. Set aside to cool for 1-2 hours, or until thick enough to spread over the cake.

My children don’t like the way a date looks so they always avoid eating it. However, they love the chocolate date cake which makes it a great way of serving them the dates.

Let me know what your children think about it!!
